Shrewsbury was the home of Charles Darwin and is situated on the River Severn. County Town of Shropshire there is a fine castle and military museum as well as shops and good eateries.
Travel north on the A49 beyond Ludlow, and you pass Stokesay Castle, a delightful 13th century manor house, hardly touched by time. Like Witley Court, Stokesay Castle is maintained by English Heritage.

Worth a visit is Croft Castle (sign posted off the A49 north of Leominster), which houses a fine walled garden and vineyard . There is also wonderful woodland for walkers and the ornate church. Again maintained by the National Trust
