Beer, cider and good food have played a big part in Tenbury’s rich history. Today the town has a wide selection of places to eat and drink, from pubs and restaurants to secluded cafes. Local breweries are to be found in Ludlow and Cleobury Mortimer and cider is made by Bulmers in Hereford, Westons near Leominster and Robinsons at Little Hereford www.RobinsonsCider.com
Once the site of a Tollhouse, Pembroke House (01584 810301) is situated at the edge of the town on the Bromyard / Leominster road. It has a very good reputation for food. Following the road towards the centre of town, we come to the Kings Head (01584 810464), which has the honour of being one of the oldest buildings in the town.
What better pub to visit on Market Day than the Market Tavern (01584 810982), situated next to The Round Market. Just around the corner is the Royal Oak (01584 810417) which has some of the oldest beams in town, dating back to the 15th century. This pub also has a large car park which is often used for special events, such as Markets.
On the corner of Teme Street is the Crow Hotel (01584 810503). The main building dates back to 1700, but the brick extension on the side was built later to accommodate visitors to the proposed spa at the Pump Rooms.
The Clockhouse at 14 Market Street is our latest eating place, having been transformed from a fine English restaurant to a very special Asian restaurant. Worth a try for something different.
White's which used to be at the Clockhouse has moved to bigger premises at the Rose and Crown, on the north side of the bridge in Burford. The quality remains unchanged, a great place for lunch or dinner or just a snack in the bar.
The Vaults (01584 811883) is one of Tenburys’ most solid drinking establishments. History tells us that this pub only had a six day licence until 1989. Following the road down past the Regal Cinema we come to the Ship Inn (01584 810269), renowned for it’s fine ale and excellent wholesome food. The last pub in Worcestershire is the Bridge Hotel (01584 810434), next to the River Teme. Cross the bridge and we are in Shropshire.
One mile out of town heading towards Leominster lies the Fountain Hotel and Restaurant (01584 810701). Recently voted British Food Pub of The Year and also Seafood Pub of The year. Under new management but the quality remains the same.
Another gastro pub of note is the AA Listed Peacock Inn (01584 810506), one mile out of Tenbury at Boraston on the A456 Kidderminster Road. A very good food menu with six luxury oak beamed bedrooms.
Just outside Tenbury in St Michaels you will find Cadmore Lodge Hotel & Country Club. Not only a 2 star hotel, golf course and Spa, but an excellent restaurant serving breakfasts, lunches and dinners 7 days a week with two of the area's finest chefs providing imaginative but not expensive food, using the best of local ingredients. A very pleasant place for a relaxed Sunday lunch overlooking the golf course and lake or for more formal large scale events such as weddings, parties or other celebrations. Suzie's Cafe and TABS Tearoom & Restaurant (01584 811712) situated in Teme Street offer a good basic all day menu from teas and snacks to main traditional meals.
The Shamraj Balti (01584 819612) has an excellent reputation for fine Asian cuisine. The Singapore Garden Chinese Restaurant (01584 811544) is also well worth a try.
There are a number of takeaway food options to suit every taste including the excellent Tenbury Fish Bar, fish and chips at their finest.
